Understanding Extremism: The Link Between Violent Radicalism and Education

12 April 2016 - 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Chatham House, London

Steffen Hertog, Associate Professor of Comparative Politics, LSE; Author, Engineers of Jihad: The Curious Connection between Violent Extremism and Education

Chair: Jane Kinninmont, Deputy Head and Senior Research Fellow, Middle East and North Africa Programme, Chatham House

Reflecting on his recent research with Diego Gambetta, Steffen Hertog will explore the relationship between socioeconomic conditions, education and extremism. Suggesting that a disproportionate number of Islamist radicals and right-wing extremists come from an engineering background, he will argue that there is a correlation between educational disciplines and types of radicalism. He will examine this connection and discuss the motivations of political violence.
