James Duddridge MP, UK Minister for Africa
Chair: Alex Vines OBE, Research Director, Area Studies and International Law; Head, Africa Programme, Chatham House

Overview

With Africa’s rapidly growing economy, its corresponding demographic shift and the development of more significant geopolitical roles for African states, there is growing international competition for strategic engagements across the continent. The UK is interested in evolving mutually beneficial relationships with African states in order to deliver greater prosperity and increased security for both the UK and Africa. Yet as the UK expands high-level partnerships, commercial diplomacy and private sector engagements, there can be a parallel tension with a values-based approach to promote democracy and defend human rights in some contexts.

As the newly appointed minister for Africa, James Duddridge MP will discuss the UK’s priorities in its political engagements with Africa and the role of improved commercial relations in underpinning a values-based approach.
