Participants

Chuka Umunna MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Business, Innovation and Skills (2011-15), Labour Party; Chair, All-Party Parliamentary Group on EU Relations; Chair, Vote Leave Watch
Chair: Thomas Raines, Research Fellow and Programme Manager, Europe Programme, Chatham House

Overview

Chuka Umunna will argue that the UK vote to leave the EU, the subsequent Brexit process, and what could then follow confronts Britain with profound questions about its identity and its role in the world, that it has not faced since the Suez Crisis in 1956.

Umunna will make the case that the post-war liberal world order and its supranational institutions are now under increasing strain. What role should Britain play within both Europe and the wider world if the country believes that it has an obligation to shape a more social democratic global order, while still upholding the UK’s national interests?
