Overview

Many countries emerging from protracted conflicts have seen former rebel leaders gain power via legitimate electoral processes. While democratization is widely seen as an important peacebuilding process, there has been increasing concern about the integration of ex-insurgents into the heart of new political systems in post-conflict countries.

At this event, the speakers will examine the effects of including ex-militaries into electoral politics on post-war stability. They will also outline policy options for national and international peacemakers seeking to encourage transitions towards democracy.

This event will launch Warlord Democrats in Africa, edited by Dr Anders Themnér and published by Zed Books.
