A Winter's Tale: Ukraine's Short-Term Energy Challenges and Long-Term Energy Solutions
Ukraine is bracing for a potentially difficult winter given possible cut-offs of Russian gas supplies and separatists’ control over most of the country’s coal mines. Mr Kobolyev will outline the challenges Ukraine is facing in delivering energy supplies to its population the short term and the extent of knock-on effects on much of the rest of Europe in the event of pre-emptive Russian action. For the longer term, Mr Kobolyev will also discuss plans for reforming the country’s energy industry to increase efficiency, eliminate subsidies and the future of relationships with oligarchs and intermediaries.
He will offer initial comments for approximately 20 minutes (in English), followed by an hour for questions and discussion.
