Women’s Economic Empowerment: A Conversation with President Michelle Bachelet

Chatham House, London

International Economics Department, Putting Gender Equality on the G20 Agenda

Participants

Michelle Bachelet, President, Chile

Overview

Chatham House’s Gender and Growth Initiative has been set up to investigate the economic problems that stem from gender inequality in both developing and developed countries and to offer public policy solutions.

Around the world, more women than men live in poverty, have no or very limited access to education, and are lagging behind with regards to access to digital technology. Many women are also excluded from economic decision-making within their own household and are paid less than men and work longer hours. Furthermore, they are often excluded from the labour market, have little or no access to finance and are sometimes denied property rights.

Empowering women and promoting their participation in economic activities is key to balanced and inclusive growth.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
