The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) has undergone a dramatic transformation in the past 20 months. In response to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, allies have significantly stepped up their defence and deterrence posture; strengthened cooperation with likeminded partners; and welcomed Finland into the alliance.
In light of a more complex and contested security environment and as the alliance heads for its 75th anniversary next year, this discussion will examine the achievements since the 2023 Vilnius Summit and expectations for the 2024 Washington Summit.
Questions for discussion will include:
After the decisions taken in Vilnius, what are the next steps for the Ukraine–NATO relationship?
How can NATO continue to promote stability in the Western Balkans?
What are the expected outcomes of the NATO Leaders’ Summit in Washington next July?
This event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
