Rethinking European Economic Governance

Chatham House, London

Overview

European Commission representatives and academic experts convened to examine the creation of the European single market - an unfinished job - and the role of the EU in the 'recalibration' of the welfare state. They discussed the Lisbon Strategy, variously a 'failed experiment', or a good example of 'learning by doing', and stressed how macroeconomic policy guidelines must inspire credibility in the markets.
