Political Reform and Tensions in the Middle East: Challenges for the International Community

17 March 2008 - 3:30pm to 5:00pm

Chatham House, London

Marina Ottaway, Paul Salem and Amr Hamzaway, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace

This roundtable meeting is organized by Chatham House and Carnegie Europe.

In January 2008, the Carnegie Endowment launched the publication Beyond the Facade: Political Reform in the Arab World.

Marina Ottaway, co-editor of the book, and contributors Paul Salem and Amr Hamzaway, will discuss some of its findings. They will evaluate the changes taking place in the region and explore the potential for further reform, highlighting the diversity of processes and problems.

The book encourages recognition of conflicting interests and the limitations of external actors to bring about political reform, while drawing lessons on how to make international democracy promotion more effective.

In late February the Carnegie Endowment will also release a new report, 'The New Middle East', which reviews 7 years of George Bush's policy and considers the challenges for the next US administration. The speakers will also comment on the report.

The meeting will be held on the record.
