The speaker was UK Ambassador to South Korea until January 2008 when he left the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. He was also posted to South Korea in the 1970s and again in the 1990s. He is one of the UK's leading experts on Korea and in his role as Ambassador he was active in lobbying for greater service sector liberalisation, promoting trade and investment between the UK and South Korea, as well as strengthening political, educational and defence links. During his diplomatic career the speaker also served as Ambassador to Vietnam and as Director of Trade and Investment at the British High Commission in India.
