Just War in Islam

30 April 2008 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Chatham House, London

Professor John Kelsay, Florida State University

Professor Kelsay's presentation will draw on his book, Arguing the Just War in Islam (Harvard, 2007), which provides a systematic description of Muslim argument occasioned by the political, military, and religious claims of al-Qaeda and other militant groups.

Navigating between the history of Muslim judgments pertaining to justice and war, and the confrontation many call the war on terror, the speaker will outline the ways militants and their critics draw on the tradition of Muslim jurisprudence or Shari'a reasoning with respect to notions of right authority, just cause, and right conduct in war.
