The Current Financial Crisis: The Role of the IMF

17 February 2009 - 8:00am to 9:15am

Chatham House, London

Sean Hagan, General Counsel and Director of the Legal Department, International Monetary Fund

Relative to earlier crises, one of the distinguishing features of the existing financial turmoil is its global reach. Although it originated in the mature economies, the crisis is being transmitted not only to emerging markets but also to a number of low income countries. Mr Hagan will discuss how the IMF is using its regulatory and financial powers to contribute to the global response. He will also identify those reforms within the IMF - both ongoing and recently proposed at the G-20 Summit - that are designed to enhance the IMF's effectiveness during this critical period.

This event is strictly by invitation only.

To enable as open a debate as possible, this event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
