David Loyn, International Development Correspondent, BBC and author, Butcher and Bolt: Two Hundred Years of Foreign Engagement in Afghanistan
Chair: Sir John Birch, Members Events Advisory Group, Chatham House

As the Obama administration plans new policies towards Afghanistan and Pakistan, David Loyn will argue that there is an increasing awareness that peace in Afghanistan is dependant on stability in Pakistan's Northwest Frontier. He will discuss future policies, taking into account the lessons learned from previous wars in Afghanistan, from British imperial invasions to Russian attempts in the 1980s.
