Foreign Policy Challenges Facing India's New Government

1 July 2009 - 5:30pm to 6:30pm

Chatham House, London

Ambassador Rajiv Sikri, Former Secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, India: author, Challenge and Strategy: Rethinking India's Foreign Policy
Chair: Dr Marie Lall, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House

India's new government faces urgent foreign policy challenges, both in its region and with the rest of the world. The speaker will argue that, in addition to handling changing equations with global powers, managing relations with smaller neighbours is difficult and complex, especially given recent internal disturbances in Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Nepal. Equally important is finding a way to balance India's relations with Iran, Israel and the Arab world. Mr Sikri will argue that the time may be ripe for rethinking India's international relations strategies.
