Iran after the Disputed Election: What Next for International Policy?
Professor Ali Ansari, Associate Fellow, Chatham House; Director, Institute of Iranian Studies, University of St Andrews;
Sir Richard Dalton, Associate Fellow, Chatham House; British Ambassador to Iran (2002-06)
Chair: Lyse Doucet, BBC and Chatham House Council Member
The contested Iranian presidential election and its aftermath have presented the United Kingdom and the international community with additional uncertainty: will the small but important signs of progress in improving relations made during the first months of the Obama administration survive?
This briefing will discuss the likely developments within Iran, including the effects of the crisis on the policies, legitimacy and authority of the government, not forgetting the repercussions of the intensified anti-UK rhetoric. The speakers will outline both the risks and the options available to policy-makers, and indicate which steps they believe are likely to be most effective.
Please note attendance at this event is for MPs and Peers only.
