Georgia's Relations with Russia: From 1991 to the Present

13 October 2009 - 14:00 to 15:30

Chatham House, London

Grigol Vashadze, Foreign Minister of Georgia

The speaker will argue that Russia's war with Georgia in August 2008 can only be understood within the context of a long-term view of the countries' relations with each other, and the West. As the conflict has shown, Georgia's future depends not only on developing relations with the West, but also successfully managing relations with Russia.

The speaker will discuss Russia's influence on Georgia's political development since independence, and scenarios for the future of bilateral relations.

In February 2008 Mr Vashadze was appointed Deputy Foreign Minister of Georgia. In November 2008 he became Minister of Culture. In December 2008 he became Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
