The Defence of the Realm
Christopher Andrew, Professor of Modern and Contemporary History, Cambridge University; author, Defend the Realm: The Official History of MI5
Chair: Iain Mathewson, Associate Fellow, International Security Programme, Chatham House
Earlier this year, to mark the centenary of its foundation, the British Security Service, MI5, opened its archives for the first time. The speaker will outline his findings about the role of the Security Service throughout the twentieth century, from its foundation, through two world wars, up to and including its present roles in counter-espionage and counter-terrorism. He will detail how MI5 has been managed, what its relationship has been with government, where it has triumphed and where it has failed.
