Niger Delta Amnesty: What Next? Options for Continuing Peace and Implementing Change

16 October 2009 - 11:30am to 12:30pm

Chatham House, London

Speaker: Annkio Opurum-Briggs, President, Agape is a Birthright
Chair: Tom Cargill, Assistant Head, Africa Programme, Chatham House

The amnesty in the Niger Delta has offered an opportunity to begin to address the underlying development, environmental and governance challenges of the region. This opportunity needs to be taken advantage of if a return to even worse violence is to be avoided. At this roundtable meeting, discussion will focus on the positions of federal and state governments and the militants, and how international actors might best engage.

Annkio Opurum-Briggs is an environmental and human rights activist in the Niger Delta, and has worked with communities in the region for 11 years.
