Sustainable Development and Environment in Pakistan: the Role of Biofuel Projects

Chatham House, London

Participants

Robert Orr, CEO Landhi Fertiliser and Biogas Company

Overview

Situated on the outskirts of the Pakistani city of Karachi, the Landhi Cattle Colony is the site for the largest bio-fuel and organic fertiliser project in the world. The surrounding areas are environmentally and socially extremely stressed as a result of many years of unrestricted dumping of farm, industrial and household waste. The inhabitants suffer from severe health problems, are impoverished, and more than half live below the poverty line. The speaker will explain how and why this has become an environmental catastrophe and the toll it is taking on human and animal health and welfare.
