Prospects and Perils of Security Sector Reform in Indonesia

5 March 2010 - 2:00pm to 4:00pm

Chatham House, London

Felix Heiduk, Visiting Fellow, Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University
Chair: Kirsten Schulze, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House

The speaker will examine the differences in post-authoritarian attempts to reform the security sector in Thailand, the Philippines, and Indonesia. He will explain the differences with regard to the 'success' of security sector reform in Indonesia and its two neighbors, examine the factors that have led to the seemingly successful democratic reform of Indonesia's security sector, and analyze how democratic Indonesia's current state of security sector governance actually is.

Felix Heiduk is currently a Fritz Thzssen Postdoc Fellow (2009 - 10) at the Weatherhead Center for International Affairs, Harvard University.

To enable as open a debate as possible, this event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
