A Vision for a Competitive and Cohesive Europe - The EU 2020 Strategy
HE Gordon Bajnai, Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary
Chair: Rt Hon Sir Malcolm Rifkind QC MP, Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs (1995-97)
Serious challenges are facing Europe in the post-crisis world. The speaker will argue that Europe can only maintain and extend its geopolitical clout if it manages not just a simple return to practice before the crisis, but a relaunch of economic growth. He will suggest that while the EU's Lisbon Strategy proved to be a disappointment, as its main goals were not fulfilled, the new EU 2020 Strategy under preparation offers the chance for Europe to regain competitiveness.
