Pakistan at the crossroads
Dr Farzana Shaikh, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House
The endgame in neighbouring Afghanistan signals a turning point for Pakistan. The fight against militancy, the transition to democracy and the restoration of its shattered economy, could all be determined by the direction Pakistan now chooses to follow. That, in turn, will depend on the management of its fraught relations with the United States, on the outcome of the struggle between its civilian and military leaders and on the readiness of international donors to support its programme of macro-economic stability.
