The Good Communist: Elite Education for Party Officials in China

19 May 2010 - 12:00 to 13:30

Chatham House, London

Dr Frank Pieke, University of Oxford

The speaker will discuss how government officials are trained for placement in the Chinese Communist Party and government.

Having carried out unique first-hand fieldwork at Communist Party schools in Yunnan and Beijing for his recent book, The Good Communist (OUP 2009), Dr Pieke will argue that the training of party officials does not simply entail the top-down imposition of faith in (or at least full compliance with) the ideological orthodoxy of the Chinese Communist Party. He will suggest that the perpetuation of the seemingly unified rule of the Party as a formal institution cannot be separated from informal networks and practices that exist within its own institutions.
