The UK's Approach to Stabilisation - the Comprehensive Approach in Action?

7 June 2010 - 10:30am to 12:30pm

Chatham House, London

Sheelagh Stewart, Head of the UK Government's Stabilisation Unit
Major General Gordon Messenger, former British Commander of Task Force Helmand and Strategic Communications Officer for the Ministry of Defence

Experience in the Balkans and Iraq has shown the need for a more integrated approach to post-conflict stabilisation and reconstruction. The speakers will say that the UK's commitment to the comprehensive approach is clear, but how does the concept translate into practice on the ground and in Whitehall? What needs to be done to implement a genuinely comprehensive approach?

The meeting will begin with presentations by Sheelagh Stewart and Major General Gordon Messenger, who will reflect on the comprehensive approach in Afghanistan.

This event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
