The China Dynamic: How Market Authoritarianism will Impact the 21st Century

22 June 2010 - 12:00pm to 1:30pm

Chatham House, London

Stefan Halper, University of Cambridge
Chair: Dr Kerry Brown, Senior Fellow, Chatham House

The speaker will outline US-China relations and a framework for how the US can effectively promote its vision for liberalism and freedom. He will argue that China's internal dynamics dictate the country's rapid expansion and with the gap in Chinese society between the haves and the have-nots widening, the Chinese Communist Party has to sustain double-digit economic growth to keep its citizens content.

Stefan Halper is a Senior Fellow in the Department of Politics and International Studies at the University of Cambridge, and a Distinguished Fellow at the Nixon Center in Washington, D.C. Halper served in the White House and Department of State during the Nixon, Ford, and Reagan administrations. His new book The Beijing Consensus was published in April 2010.
