Thailand's Twin Challenges: Colour-Coded Conflicts and the Restive South

16 June 2010 - 17:00 to 18:00

Chatham House, London

Duncan McCargo, Professor of Southeast Asian Politics, University of Leeds

The speaker will examine the recent national level political upheavals in Thailand which culminated in the two-month-long redshirt demonstrations in Bangkok; and their relationship with the ongoing insurgency in the country's Muslim majority Southern border provinces, where more than 4200 people have been killed since 2004. He will argue that both conflicts reflect a crisis of legitimacy and raise fundamental questions about the way power is organised in Thailand.

To enable as open a debate as possible, this event will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
