Restoring Judgment: Realigning Finance and the Real Economy

12 October 2010 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Chatham House, London

Professor Amar Bhidé, author, A Call for Judgement: Sensible Finance for a Dynamic Economy
Vanessa Rossi, Senior Research Fellow, International Economics Programme, Chatham House

The speaker will argue that our prosperity requires the enterprise of innumerable individuals and businesses who exercise their imagination and judgment-and bear responsibility for outcomes. Widespread enterprise is fostered through dialogue and relationships, not merely prices in anonymous markets, yet in the last several decades, finance has become increasingly centralized, distanced, and mechanistic. Amar Bhidé will consider how bad theories and mis-regulation have led to this dangerous divergence between the real economy and finance.
