Senegal's Growing UK Trade Links and Regional Policy

15 November 2010 - 10:00am to 11:00am

Chatham House, London

HE Maitre Madicke Niang, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Republic of Senegal
Chair: Paul Melly, Associate Fellow, Africa Programme, Chatham House

Despite the lack of direct flight connections or UKTI presence in country, the UK is now Senegal's second largest trading partner. Last year, UK exports to Senegal rose faster than to any other country in the world except Chile and Nigeria. Senegal plays an active role in the Economic Community of West African States and in the African Union more generally. Its religiously tolerant mixed society offers important wider lessons. The speaker will lead the discussion on how the UK and Senegal might engage more closely to overcome the challenges that impact both countries, as well as build on increasingly important economic links.

The minister will be speaking in French. English translation will be provided.
