The speaker will discuss the importance of China's modern history in understanding the country as it stands today. Drawing upon his most recent book, China: a Modern History (I.B. Tauris, 2010), he will discuss how memories of the history of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and the nation play a significant role in maintaining the status quo, the authority of the CCP and notions of the identity of China and the Chinese.
