UK Engagement in Africa on Climate Change

Chatham House, London

Energy, Environment and Resources Department

Overview

In consultation with DECC, Chatham House and E3G are hosting this workshop to critically assess UK/EU engagement strategies with key African countries on climate change and how these should be shaped in the context of an understanding of wider political issues.

Africa is a critical 'swing player' in delivering an international agreement which can keep climate change below 2C. However, it's cultural, political and economic diversity makes engagement challenging. Successful future UK/EU engagement with Africa around the international negotiations and broader international debates requires clearer expectations and engagement strategy based on better understanding and intelligence on: national interests, internal political dynamics in key players, capacity limitations, role within the G77/China, links to broader geo-political issues and internal Africa group dynamics.

Attendance is by invitation only.
