Professor John Iliffe, St. John's College, Cambridge, and author Obasanjo, Nigeria and the World
Chair: Bob Dewar, former British High Commissioner to Nigeria

Overview

Olusegun Obasanjo was Nigeria's military head of state (1976-9) and President (1999 - 2007). In his book, Obasanjo, Nigeria and the World, John Iliffe discusses Obasanjo's career and the end of his presidency in 2007 which was marked by growing authoritarianism and his manipulation of his successor's election. Iliffe argues that the controversial end of Obasanjo's presidency needs to be understood in light of his earlier career.

At this event, the author will discuss his analysis, setting it in the context of current events in Nigeria with its 2011 elections fast approaching.
