The Security Environment in East Asia

8 February 2011 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Chatham House, London

Koji Tsuruoka, Deputy Vice-Minister for Foreign Policy, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan
Chair: Dr Robin Niblett, Director, Chatham House

The speaker will explain why he believes the security environment in East Asia is becoming more dangerous than ever. He will discuss North Korea's continuing nuclear and missile programmes and argue that the opacity of China's military modernization and its vigorous maritime activities have triggered serious concerns. He will suggest that in order to face changes in the security environment, Japan needs to contribute to regional stability in cooperation with other partner countries.
