Only Diplomacy: Hard-Headed Soft Power for a Time of Risk, Scarcity and Insecurity

21 February 2011 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Chatham House, London

John Ashton, The Foreign Secretary's Special Representative for Climate Change, Foreign and Commonwealth Office
Chair: Bernice Lee, Research Director, Energy, Environment and Resource Governance, Chatham House

The speaker will argue that a successful response to climate change requires making the low carbon economy the answer to the growth question, and establishing the reduction of climate risk as a security imperative. He will suggest that if diplomacy does not rise to this vocational challenge, the levers of foreign policy will lose purchase on the forces shaping world affairs.
