Russia Ahead of the Elections
Georgiy Bovt, one of Russia's leading political commentators, will discuss Russia's current political dynamics as the country moves towards new elections.
Russia is entering another election cycle, with parliamentary elections in late 2011, and presidential elections in 2012. Speculation is mounting regarding who will run from the Medvedev-Putin tandem. Meanwhile, the popularity of both figures, and of the 'party of power' United Russia, appears to be falling. Whilst few doubt an effectively 'managed' electoral process, this will take place against a backdrop of uncertainty regarding the long-term viability of the political model.
Georgiy Bovt is currently a co-chairman of the Right Cause political party. He is also a columnist for gazeta.ru and for eu-russiacentre.org. He was previously editor-in-chief of Publishing House Rodionov business magazine group and the magazine Profil. Georgiy has also worked at Moscow State University within the history faculty and at the Institute of Global Economy and International Relations of the Russian Academy of Science.
This roundtable is held in partnership with the EU-Russia Centre.
