Global Governance for the 21st Century: A UNESCO Perspective

11 April 2011 - 1:30pm to 2:30pm

Chatham House, London

Irina Bokova, Director General, UNESCO
Chair: Sam Daws, Director, Project on UN Governance and Reform, University of Oxford

The speaker sees it as a core challenge of global governance today to find ways to harmonize multiple interests and manage complexity in the direction of the common good. She will explain how this calls for innovative leadership and strong cooperation, and argue that UNESCO plays a leading role in promoting cooperation in areas that tend to fall between the cracks of globalization. She will explore the stakes raised, in particular, by culture and education in international relations today, and will contend that UNESCO should be looked to as a pillar of global governance.
