The Tandem: Where Next for Russia?
With the presidential election a year away, it remains unclear whether Dmitry Medvedev will run for a second term, or Prime Minister Vladimir Putin will return to the Kremlin. The implications of this decision are also uncertain. Has the move to a ruling tandem changed the way Russia's political elite operate? Would Putin's return imply a different political and economic path for Russia?
Olga Kryshtanovskaya will discuss the interests of the key elite factions and scenarios for Russia's political development as it approaches the next election cycle. Professor Kryshtanovskaya will speak for approximately 30 minutes with consecutive interpretation, followed by an hour of questions and discussion.
Olga Kryshtanovskaya is Head of the Department of Elite Studies at the Institute of Sociology of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Moscow and director of the Institute for Applied Politics. She is also a visiting professor at the University of Glasgow. Her most recent book is Anatomiya rossiiskoi elity (An Anatomy of the Russian Elite) (Moscow: Zakharov, 2005); and her articles have appeared in a series of Western journals.
