EU-Belarus Relations: Between Isolation and Engagement

20 April 2011 - 2:00pm to 5:30pm

Chatham House, London

Andrei Liakhovich, Centre for Political Education
Dzianis Melyantsou, Belarusian Institute for Strategic Studies
Pirkka Tapiola, European External Action Service

This event will consider how the European Union is seen in Belarus by different factions within the ruling elite, and various opposition groups. Participants will then be invited to discuss the successes and failures of EU policy towards Belarus. What should it be trying to achieve? Does it have a strategic approach, and if so, do the necessary policy implements exist to achieve this?

In the first session, three speakers from Belarus, Andrei Liakhovich, Svetlana Kalinkina and Dzianis Melyantsou, will discuss how the EU is seen from Belarus. In the second session, Pirkka Tapiola and Pavol Demes will respond to the initial presentations, and consider the future of EU-Belarus relations.

Attendance is by invitation only.
