Amnesty in the Niger Delta: Sustaining Peace and Surmounting Challenges
Hon. Kingsley Kemebradigha Kuku, Special Adviser to the President of Nigeria on Niger Delta Affairs and Chairman of the Amnesty Committee
Chair: Bronwen Manby, Senior Program Advisor, Africa Governance Monitoring and Advocacy Project, Open Society Foundation
The amnesty in the Niger Delta, offered by Nigeria’s Federal Government in 2009 to militant leaders to reduce the level of violent insecurity in Nigeria’s oil producing region, has been sustained longer than many observers anticipated and despite ongoing systemic challenges in the region. At this event, Hon. Kingsley Kuku will explain how relative peace in the Niger Delta has been maintained, detail the challenges that the Amnesty Committee has confronted, and offer his perspective on future stability and development in the Niger Delta.
