Popular Legitimacy and the European Parliament

15 July 2011 - 2:30pm to 3:30pm

Chatham House, London

Andrew Duff MEP, Spokesman on Constitutional Affairs, Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe (ALDE), President, Union of European Federalists (UEF)
Chair: Petros Fassoulas, Head of Policy, Europe and Americas, ACCA

The Lisbon Treaty provided the European Parliament with expanded powers, but questions surrounding the Parliament's lack of popular legitimacy remain. The speaker will explore the moves to address this, including the question of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the European and national parliaments, and ask whether it is possible for the European Parliament to prevent the UK's relationship with the EU from deteriorating.
