Democracy in the Context of Regional Integration in West Africa: Status, Challenges and Perspectives

7 June 2011 - 6:30pm to 7:30pm

Chatham House, London

HE James Victor Gbeho, President of the Commission, Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS)
Chair: Bob Dewar CMG, Former British High Commissioner to Nigeria and Permanent Representative to ECOWAS

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has become an increasingly important force for regional stability and development. Despite growing opportunities across the region and rising international investor interest, complex challenges remain, with a number of countries at different stages of recovery from civil war, burgeoning threats to stability from the drugs trade, growing problems associated with population growth and youth unemployment, and shortcomings in infrastructure, power distribution and agricultural production. The speaker will outline what ECOWAS is doing to encourage the region's transformation and growth.
