The Russia-Japan Territorial Dispute: Identity, Interests and Prospects for Resolution

Chatham House, London

Asia Programme

Alexander Bukh, Author, Japan’s National Identity and Foreign Policy: Russia as Japan’s ‘Other’

The speaker will examine the ongoing territorial dispute between Japan and Russia. He will consider the context within which the notion of the ‘Northern Territories’ emerged in Japan and the reasons behind its persistent quest for the return of the four islands. He will argue that the islands are intrinsically linked to the construction of contemporary Japan’s identity.
