Unconventional Oil: Economic and Environmental Implications of Oil Sands

Chatham House, London

Participants

John Abbott, Executive Vice President for Heavy Oil, Shell

Overview

REGISTRATION FOR THIS EVENT HAS NOW CLOSED.

This event will look at the challenges facing the oil industry as it continues to invest in the exploration and extraction of unconventional oil. In recent years, concerns over peak oil and price fluctuation have encouraged oil companies to pursue new and more challenging means of accessing fuel supplies. However, these unconventional oil projects have raised a number of environmental and economic concerns, over and above the climate implications of the use of fossil fuels.

Of particular interest are the Canadian oil sands, where reserves are claimed to be second in size to those of conventional crude in Saudi Arabia. John Abbott, Shell’s Executive Vice President for Heavy Oil, will draw on his experience of working in Canada to discuss the challenges facing this and other unconventional oil projects.

Attendance at this event is strictly by invitation only.
