Chatham House, London

Lucy Morgan Edwards, Author, The Afghan Solution: The Inside Story of Abdul Haq, the CIA and How Western Hubris Lost Afghanistan
Chair: Gareth Price, Senior Research Fellow, Asia Programme

The speaker will reflect on the approach taken by the allied forces since 2001 in confronting the terrorist threat emanating from Afghanistan. She will assess this strategy against the alternative Afghan 'internal solution' proposed by Abdul Haq, the mujahideen commander who led the resistance during the war against the Soviets. In arguing that the West thwarted the Afghan solution to dealing with the Taliban, she will offer her thoughts on what this means for NATO as it seeks to stabilize and exit from Afghanistan.
