China's Economic Dominance: The UK as a Mirror for the US?

5 October 2011 - 1:00pm to 2:00pm

Chatham House, London

Arvind Subramanian, Senior Fellow, Peterson Institute for International Economics and Author, Eclipse: Living in the Shadow of China's Economic Dominance
Chair: Roderic Wye, Associate Fellow, Asia Programme, Chatham House

The speaker will argue that the historical experience of the United Kingdom is informative in understanding the vulnerability of the United States to China’s economic dominance, as is the experience of sterling in predicting the rise of the renminbi as the world’s premier reserve currency.  He will go on to offer suggestions for ensuring that the open global economic system survives China’s dominance.
