Dr Bertrand Ramcharan, former Deputy and Acting UN High Commissioner for Human Rights
Patrizia Scannella, Deputy Representative to the UN in Geneva, Amnesty International

In 2006 the United Nations abolished the Commission on Human Rights and replaced it with a new Human Rights Council tasked with addressing situations of human rights violations and making recommendations on them. There were high hopes that the Council would prove more effective than its predecessor which had been crippled by politicisation and various other defects. Five years after its launch, this meeting will assess the Human Rights Council's performance as the world's primary venue for promoting and protecting human rights.
