The Prospects for Deficit Reduction in the US

9 May 2011 - 1:30pm to 3:00pm

Chatham House, London

Ann Fudge, Member, Presidential Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform

US deficit reduction remains politically divisive and multiple options have been presented to address it. These range from the report of the Bowles-Simpson Commission (of which Ms Fudge was a member), to the 2012 budget plan from Rep. Paul Ryan, to the proposal laid out by President Obama in his speech at George Washington University on 13 April. In the coming months this will be compounded by the debate over raising the debt ceiling, with a decision needed by mid-June, and it will continue to be one of the central themes of the 2012 US election.
