To mark World AIDS Day (1 December), a distinguished panel of policy advisors and researchers will take a fresh look at a long-standing debate in global health aid that has pitted the dominant strategy of tackling specific diseases against one that aims instead to strengthen entire health systems. The panellists will discuss how the global institutions central to the fight against HIV and AIDS have increasingly attempted to mix the two approaches and will examine some important underlying political, ethical and practical questions largely neglected in the current debate.
