Kazakhstan Beyond the Elections
Yermukhamet Yertysbayev, Adviser to the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan
Ahead of recently announced elections scheduled for 15 January, Mr Yertysbayev, an advisor to President Nazarbayev, will discuss recent events in Kazakhistan and likely future developments. Since August, Kazakhstan has faced labour unrest in the oil-rich province of Mangistau, and on 16 December 2011, the 20th anniversary of Kazakhstan’s independence, violent clashes occurred between the police and protesters in Zhanaozen, resulting in several fatalities. The government responded by declaring a state of emergency in the city.
Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
