The Mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on Internally Displaced Persons
Dr Chaloka Benyani, Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Internally Displaced Persons
Chair: Louise Arimatsu, Associate Fellow, International Law, Chatham House
The recorded number of people displaced within their country due to conflict or violence rose to 27.5 million in 2010, the highest in a decade. It is likely that this figure increased during 2011 given the armed conflict in Libya and the heightened insecurity in Syria, Sudan, Cote d’Ivoire and Yemen. On the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the mandate of the UN Special Rapporteur on internally displaced persons (IDPs), the current post-holder will reflect on the progress achieved at the international and regional levels to strengthen the protection of IDPs and consider the ways in which his office can continue to contribute to the further entrenchment of these norms.
