Rebooting the West as the Rest Rise
Sir Michael Rake, Chairman, BT Group plc
Chair: Dr Robin Niblett, Director, Chatham House
The political and trade relationships between the UK, the EU and the US have underpinned their collective economic strength during the last half century. The EU Single Market and the depth of economic integration are just two examples of the engine of Euro-Atlantic growth. However, with the rise of new economic powers, the speaker will argue that it is clear that the UK’s relationship with the EU and the EU’s relationship with the US must be reinvigorated in order to ensure their long-term competitiveness.
Recent EU summits and wider international efforts have been ambitious and potentially far-reaching; but will they help underpin growth and jobs at a time of economic and financial crisis? And how will the developing web of bilateral and multilateral trade agreements, whether with economies in Asia, Latin America or Africa, affect the traditional trade environment?
